After a 3-hour train delay, we finally make it to Rome. We had to talk to our Airbnb in the dark and it was hard because no one was really out to ask for directions. But we made it work and found our spot. For our first spot, we decided to pick one that was closer to the Vatican because we were heading there in two days. We were so tired from travel again that we just went to the first place we could find that was opened, ordered a big bowl of pasta and some Spritz and called it a night.
The next day we just wanted to see as much as we could. So we started walking towards the Travi fountain. There is a movie that I would watch called Lizzie Mcguire. They took a trip to Italy and there was this iconic scene in the movie with her at the fountain. I couldn’t help but think of it when I was there. We went to the Spanish Steps, ate dinner at the Pantheon, drank wine under the stairs at the Piazza Navona. This first full day was packed with so much but it was amazing and I wouldn’t have changed anything.
The next day we had our tickets to go to the Vatican. I didn’t know what to expect but I did know that Ian and I were very excited to get in. All of the artifacts that were inside were breathtaking. There were so many different statues and many other pieces of history in there. And when we got into the church you were not allowed to take any photos. We just stood there and looked at all the paintings on the walls. There was so much detail it was hard to see everything at once. When we were done there we headed over the Sistine Chapel. The time to get in was so long I still don’t know how we got in. Once we were in we got to witness mass happening. It was the most peaceful thing I have ever witnessed.
The next day we change Airbnb’s, this time one closer to the Colosseum. We waited in time to get our tickets and just wondered inside once we were in. It was insane thinking about all the different things that happened in this one Colosseum, how much history there so crazy to think about.
Once we were done we wanted to grab dinner and some beer. So we found this local brewery and sat there for a couple hours. We got this bright idea to walk back to the Colosseum at night to see if we could even get close to see it at night. When we walked up we noticed there was the army waiting outside of it. We were so scared they were going to yell at us to go away. But to our surprise, they told us it was fine if we just were outside the gates. If you ever have the privilege to go to Rome I 100% recommend going to the Colosseum both during the day and at night. Totaly different views.
We will be going back to Italy hopefully very soon. As you can imagine there are so many different places we still wanted to go to.
